100 BLACK-OWNED RESTAURANTS IN MARYLAND & DC

Eateries, a staple that has been one of the simple enjoyments we all love. Within this article, we will be discussing and elucidating black-owned restaurants around the Maryland and Washington D.C. area. From breakfast to bakeries and cafes.

Starting with breakfast the first haven you should bite into is Florida Avenue Grill. Which happens to be the oldest soul food restaurant in the world, since 1944! This mouthwatering delicacy sells breakfast all day with a variety of creative dishes. This food is sure to touch your soul! With their homemade biscuits, pancakes, and, French toast. They also specialize in Salmon cakes, and, veggie sausages. Florida Avenue also sells dinner food options, such as Croaker, BBQ Pork Ribs, and Cajun styled catfish. Also including fresh vegetable plates and classic southern sides.

In 1944, Lacey C. Williams, Jr. saved all his tips from previous jobs to put into his restaurant. He wanted to create a home away from home for people to enjoy his food. And create a safe place and where people of different races, social standings, and even religions could sit side by side and have a meal in Washington. The business is still very successful and thriving off the same concept started years ago.

Secondly, The Uncaged Chefs. Damian Brown, the founder, strives to push boundaries and break the traditional food combinations. At the age of 25, Brown was already cooking in kitchens such as Vidalia and The Blue Duck Tavern. By 28, he was already the youngest chef in Washington which gained him recognition alone! And after many years, he began to dislike the restraint on his creativity for restaurant menus and set out to create his name and trademark in Maryland with his many flavors by also recruiting many up and coming chefs that shared his vision. And he’s been succeeding ever since. Try out his very creative and delicious flavors!

With many uncommon combinations, he and his team have uncaged the flavor with his customers. With his strawberry shortcake cinnamon bun and fried chicken entrees, to their dessert, Captain crunch cereal milk banana pudding. And much more! The company has gained much recognition fromtelevision, celebrities, and Newspapers! Be sure to try them out soon!

Next Up is NuVegan, which has a location in Washington and Maryland. NuVegan is, you guessed it, a vegetarian food haven where their slogan is where compassion meets nutrition. This family-owned restaurant has three locations and is still working on expanding while seasonally operating their food trucks. The goal was and still is to create food that’s nutritious and delicious for the soul and body. They ensure the food is 100% vegan prepared and made fresh in their kitchen. Which includes many options from hot and cold meals, such as kale and other vegetables to their vegan mac & cheese! Not to mention their vegan crabcake sandwich.

The company also serves baked treats such as cinnamon rolls and other delicious vegan treats. “Our food items are made with all-natural and organic ingredients whenever possible, upon request we can accommodate some gluten-free options.” They mention on their website. Be sure to try them out soon!

Our next restaurant on the list is Milk and Honey Cafe, this brunch themed restaurant located in Maryland, Executive chef Sammy Davis and partner Monique Rose has set the bar for fine dining and amazing food! The company sells delicious New Orleans Po-boys that can be made with delicious seafood, and other amazing seafood meals such as their deep-fried salmon or crab hash and their lobster, egg, and cheese biscuit! They also sell wings, shrimp and grits, and pasta. This restaurant has won the hearts of customers all over the map with their three locations, including Georgia Avenue, DC, and, Atlanta, Georgia. Be sure you visit them soon and join the long list of satisfying customers!
